8 Ways To Stay Cool and Save Money

Stay cool & Save Money

Did you know that the average residential electric bill costs more that $110 per month? What else could you do with that money? Nice dinners out, airplane tickets, weekend activities… the list goes on and on. Save yourself some money this summer by following these 8 easy tips and cut costs on your monthly air conditioning.

Cut Your AC Bills

  1. Set your thermostat to 78 degrees. Experts say that for every two degrees you raise your thermostat, you’ll decrease your cooling costs by nearly 10 percent.
  2. Use drapes or curtains in the heat of the day. Keeping the direct sun from streaming through your windows will help your home stay significantly cooler.
  3. Regularly change your HVAC filter. Air conditioning systems with dirty filters tend to use 5 to 10 percent more energy.
  4. Make minimum use of your oven and stove. These appliances heat up your kitchen to unbearable temperatures and require your air conditioning to work harder.
  5. Change your light bulbs to energy-efficient LED bulbs. Not only do LEDs save you money and last for years, but they also generate less heat than incandescent bulbs.
  6. Line-dry your laundry outside. The benefits of this tip are many: your clothes get freshly air-dried, you save money on electricity from your dryer and you don’t add extra heat to your already warm home.
  7. Use fans. Whether they are ceiling fans, stand fans or tower fans, you’ll be able to use a lot less energy and add cool circulation in your home.
  8. Fully shutdown all unused electronic devices. Since many electronics have transformers, they put out a substantial amount of heat. Turn off any TV, entertainment system, computer, etc. not in use.

We hope that you have enjoyed the summer as much as we have!  We apologize that you didn’t hear from us last month, but things have been busy! In this newsletter you will see pix from Hot August Nights, to Yellowstone, to industry awards. Adam Heuer was given an award from the Nevada Independent Insurance Agents for his position on the board, the Strategic Planning Chair!  Great job Adam! I know that was a time consuming job this year!  Our office manager Debi took a road trip with her family to see some of America in its finest, Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore!  Look for more pictures on this epic trip to come.  Lastly, you’ll see a picture of our 56 Chevy Pro Street Rod during this year’s Hot August Nights.

And since this blog was mostly about fun, we wanted to pay tribute to a guy who ran a GREAT insurance company for many years, and whose company has helped provide information for this blog over the year.  Adam and I took the retiring President of Nevada Capital Insurance Company; Mr. Pete Cazzolla fishing at a place outside of Lake Almanor called Lassen Meadows Ranch.  GREAT fishery and if you are interested in getting a fishing report, just ask!  We had a BLAST and it was a great way to thank a great guy who really made a difference in the Nevada Insurance marketplace.  We will miss you Peter!  Tight Lines and here’s to a looooong retirement our friend.

Take care and see you next month unless you come by the office. If you do happen to stop by be sure to ask if I am in the office, I’d love the chance to visit.  Stay cool and good luck in school kids!

More on Debi’s Trip to Yellowstone:
This year my husband and I along with 4 other family members spent our vacation at Yellowstone National Park.  We took our trailers and camped at Madison Campground.  Yellowstone is beautiful.  There are so many things to see such as wildlife, geysers, thermal features and waterfalls.  You can fish, hike or just drive around the grand loop.  We finished off our vacation visiting Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Mount Rushmore National Park and Crazy Horse Memorial.  Amazing vacation we will never forget!

3 Reasons To Invest In Life Insurance

life insurance

Life Insurance may not seem like a necessity or a priority, but here are three reasons you should invest in a life insurance policy as soon as possible.

1. Provide Yourself With Peace Of Mind

Life insurance benefits your loved ones after you’re gone, but it also benefits you while you’re living. Instead of spending your time and energy worrying about your family’s welfare, you’ll know that they are safe and protected if anything unfortunate happens to you.

2. Provide For Your Loved Ones In The Future

If your loved ones rely on you for financial support, or if you want to provide extra security for them in the future, life insurance is one of the best ways to protect them. It gives your family a sizable amount of money that they know they can rely on if necessary.

3. Start Saving

Many life insurance policies provide you with benefits while you’re still living. For example, a policy holder can borrow against the cash value of a policy or withdraw money. This allows you to save for an emergency while providing protection for your family.

How Much Life Insurance Do You Need?

The amount of life insurance you need will depend on your assets, your financial obligations, your health, the health of your family members, and your goals for the future. For example, someone with a young family, few assets, and many debts should carry a life insurance policy that provides a substantial amount of protection, while someone who owns their home, has grown children, and no debts, may need less. Contact an insurance agent if you need help determining how much life insurance is best for you.

6 Steps to Keep Your Bike Running Like New

Motorcycle checklist

Whether you’re riding a 1926 Harley-Davidson JD or a 2015 Kawasaki H2, keeping your motorcycle in mint condition will ensure a lifetime of fun, fantastic riding. By following these 6 tips, you’ll have your motorcycle running like new all the time.

1.     Store Safely

Storing your motorcycle properly is the first and most important step toward keeping your bike looking shiny and running like new. Keep it in your garage, under a car shelter or consider purchasing a durable, sturdy motorcycle cover.

2.     Take Care of The Tires

Keeping your tires properly inflated is crucial for smooth running. Driving with low tires is risky because it can negatively affect the gas mileage and the way your bike handles. Check your air pressure every time you ride.

3.     Stay On Top of the Oil

By regularly changing the oil and oil filter on your bike, you’ll keep it running in tiptop shape for a very long time. Before you go on a ride, be sure to check the oil level; it should always be at the high or max level. Be sure your bike is not over filled or under filled, as these can be disastrous to your engine.

4.     Beware of the Battery

A good battery can last a lifetime when properly kept and adequately charged. The best way to ensure reliable battery life is to keep it charged when you’re not riding it, preferably by using a trickle charger. Also, consider purchasing a battery that is sealed and maintenance-free.

5.     Attend to the Air Filter

Motorcycle air filters are notorious for trapping a significant amount of debris. It is vital that you keep these filters as clean as possible and replace whenever needed. Without a clean air filter you risk debris getting into your engine and causing great damage to your bike.

6.     Better Your Breaks

The more you ride your motorcycle, the less effective your break fluid gets because it absorbs moisture every time you go for a drive. It’s a good idea to change your break fluid every year or two to ensure your breaks are in the best condition possible.

By following these six steps, you’ll keep your motorcycle running like new for a lifetime. The money and time you put into your bike help make it an important investment in your life.
