Understanding Auto Insurance Premium Increases

Many of you may have noticed that the auto insurance industry seems to be continually increasing premiums. While Heuer Insurance Agency represents many of the top insurance companies in the country and we can quote you with several companies, the trend for premiums is up. There are many reasons why this is happening and it is important for you to understand.

  • There are more new cars on the market that are expensive to repair.
  • The technology in vehicles today is much more expensive to replace than it used to be.
  • More people are driving. In 2015, miles driven increased 3.5% which is the most annual increase in 25 years.
  • Drivers are increasingly distracted. One out of four car crashes involve cell phone use.
  • Medical payments are increasing due to the complexity of the health insurance industry.
  • Claims severity (payments) overall is increasing.

Is there anything that you can do to control your costs?

Yes, contact us so we can shop for you!

Unfortunately insurance premiums are pooled. The premiums are calculated off of risks and data from other drivers just like you. Age, gender, zip code, vehicle driven and driving history are just some of the factors that determine your premium. Here are some things you can do to ensure you’re getting the best rates.

  • Review your coverage and determine if it is the correct coverage for your current situation
  • Review discounts you may be eligible for with your current carrier
  • If it isn’t already, consider bundling your insurance coverage (home, auto, specialty insurance)

If you have specific questions about your auto insurance coverage, remember to reach out to our agency. As an independent insurance agent, we can review your coverage and ensure you’re current carrier is still the best carrier for your situation.

5 Simple Tips to Avoid Having Your Vehicle Stolen

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the United States. Having your vehicle stolen is not only a huge inconvenience, but it is also frightening and violating experience that can sometimes be avoided by taking certain precautions.

5 Tips to Avoid Your Car from Being Stolen:

  1. At nighttime, always park your vehicle in well-lit areas. Thieves thrive in dark places where they can easily be hidden.
  2. Keep the inside of your car clean and avoid leaving valuables exposed. Use your trunk if you are transporting valuables.
  3. Always lock your car door and windows. The most basic tip of them all. Many people feel comfortable leaving their car unlocked while it’s parked at their home or other safe areas. Get in the habit of always locking your car to avoid any unexpected surprises.
  4. Keep your spare key in your home, not under your car. Thieves tend to check for spare keys in common areas like under the car.
  5. Invest in an alarm system or anti-theft device. The simplest form of protection is an anti-theft device like an alarm or a wheel locking device such as “The Club.”

While these tips can’t guarantee your car will never be stolen, protecting your assets in the event of a car theft can be as simple as having the right insurance policy. Investing in comprehensive coverage will cover the loss of car theft. Contact your licensed insurance agent at Heuer Insurance Agency to make sure you have this coverage is on your insurance policy.

April Newsletter

Hello from Heuer Insurance Agency, and welcome to the beginning of a very long awaited Spring! It was a fantastic winter for our snowpack, but now it’s time to think about what all that snow and water means to you as a homeowner. Our area experienced a lot of high wind days, as well as enough rain and snow to dig us out of a drought, but we are starting to see some residual claims resulting from all that extreme weather….so, what should you as a cautious homeowner be doing about YOUR property?

It was a fantastic winter for our snowpack, but now it’s time to think about what all that snow and water means to you as a homeowner. Our area experienced a lot of high wind days, as well as enough rain and snow to dig us out of a drought, but we are starting to see some residual claims resulting from all that extreme weather….so, what should you as a cautious homeowner be doing about YOUR property?

Believe it or not, we see a large number of claims where our clients haven’t been in a room, or the garage, or even their RV since the storms hit and they are finding hidden water damage. I suggest taking a few minutes to walk through your entire house , each room and closet, and look for signs of water leaking and/or damage. The worst part of a water claim is the resulting toxic mold that invariably shows up in most occasions. If you haven’t gone out and opened up your RV’s, Boats or Motor homes, we would suggest you check for signs of water leaks there too. It’s much easier to fix this type of problem if you are proactive versus reactive. If you have a basement, or can access your crawl space, give those spaces a close look as well. Roofs and window sills are also a good place to see tell tale signs of a problem you might not even know you have.

Just prior to writing this blog there was a news article all about who’s responsible for the Little Valley Fire in Washoe Valley and where the blame lies. Once all that gets worked out, hopefully the rebuilding can start. We re-toured that area a few weeks ago and even after people losing their homes for months and months now, virtually NO REBUILDING has begun. Our hearts and prayers continue to go out to that small community, but it does speak volumes about the difficulty of navigating a long claims process. Please think about this situation when talking to your agent at HIA and do everything in your power to make sure you are purchasing enough coverage on your house to “weather a claim situation” should you ever be unfortunate enough to find yourself in that community’s situation. Homeowners insurance isn’t cheap…..but the trusted agents at HIA can help you make the right coverage decisions, all while keeping your budget and costs in mind.

Enough about Insurance, let’s talk about what else is going on here at HIA. As our loyal readers know, this is the time of year when we are working with our local Rotary Clubs on their mission to support our troubled youth. These particular young men and women are ones who have overcome obstacles and are on track to graduate High School with aspirations of pursuing higher education. Reno South Rotary has welcomed several other clubs on their journey and this program continues to grow year after year. This year, I am happy to announce they are awarding over $20,000 towards first year scholarships while allocating some additional resources for past winners. We are very happy and proud to be a part of this program and would encourage you to get involved as well. If you’re interested in more information, please visit their website or reach out to Adam Heuer. http://achievementbeyondobstacles.com/

Last but certainly not least we are excited to announce that we have added to our team!

Late last year we brought Derek Moore on board to help fill an open position in our Commercial Lines Department. Derek comes to us with a few years of experience and a whole lot of enthusiasm. Derek’s primary role in the office is Commercial Lines Sales and Service but he’s also well versed in Life Insurance and is always eager to have that conversation with our clients. If you’d like to know more about Derek you can read his bio here (https://www.heuerinsurance.com/meet-the-team-derek/).

We have also welcomed back Dustin Snell and couldn’t be happier that he is back on the team. Dustin comes to HIA with several years of experience and is excited to help the Personal Lines Department grow. Dustin’s main focus will be Personal Lines Sales, Marketing and Community Outreach so expect to see him out and about at your local fundraisers and charity events. For those of you that don’t know Dustin, we will have his bio up shortly.

Thank you for your continued loyalty, and THANK YOU to the Women and Men of our Armed Forces!
