I’m Considered a High Risk Driver – What Can I do to Change That?

If you’re searching for a new auto insurance policy and the company or agent tells you you’re “high risk” what exactly does that mean and what can you do to improve that?

While there is no real definition of what a high risk driver is, high risk drivers typically fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Too many speeding tickets or moving violations
  2. Accidents on their CLUE report
  3. Suspended driver’s license
  4. DUI/DWI or other major violations like reckless driving
  5. Excessive Speed violation
  6. Fatal accident history

Even if you don’t fit the criteria listed above, you may still experience higher than normal insurance premiums because of your:

  1. Credit history
  2. Age (new driver or elderly)
  3. Exotic or Sports car
  4. Lapse in your insurance coverage

Being a high risk driver does mean you’ll experience higher premiums. Additionally, many insurance companies will refuse to insure you or limit your available coverage you may purchase. The best remedy to fixing your high risk status is to clean up your driving habits. Over time you can regain your status as a preferred driver and get better insurance premiums and more choices.

Do I Need to Purchase Rental Car Insurance?

When you are on vacation renting a car, you will most likely be asked if you want to purchase insurance for the car. Sometimes purchasing that insurance policy is needed, but other times you may already be covered with your own auto insurance policy. Some individuals even have insurance benefits through their credit cards.

Auto Insurance

Do you need to buy their rental car insurance coverage? Before going on vacation, reach out to your licensed agent with questions regarding your auto policy. An auto insurance policy can be unique to the driver. Many times, if you have collision, comprehensive and liability coverage on your auto policy, this would cover your rental car too as a temporary replacement vehicle. If you find you’re only covered for a specific amount, contact your credit card company to see if they can fill the gap.

Rental car insurance options can include: liability, personal accident, collision damage, personal effects coverage. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Liability: Insurance coverage if you damage another car, property and medical bills for the other party if you’re found liable for the accident.

Personal Accident: Coverage for accidental death, medical expenses and ambulatory costs of you and your household members in the vehicle.

Collision Damage: Coverage to repair the rental car in the event you are involved in an accident.

Personal Effects: Insurance that covers personal items lost or damaged such as cell phones, purses and computers.

Roadside Assistance: Coverage for roadside incidents such as lost keys, lockouts, fuel outages and flat tires.

Always check with your licensed agent to review your policy BEFORE going on your vacation to ensure you know what coverage options you may or may not need. Furthermore, be sure to understand the terms and conditions of the insurance policy you’re purchasing if you decide to buy coverage from the rental agency.

Knowing the details of your insurance policy can help you fully understand your coverage, give you peace of mind, as well as save you money.

Heuer Insurance Agency’s August Newsletter

As we look to close summer, families are planning for their Sons or Daughters to be moving into a college dorm or residence. We often get asked, “How does Lauren or Mark moving out of the area to attend school affect our insurance?” That’s a great question and we need to look for both the exposure of Liability/Property insurance AND Car insurance.

Now keep in mind, some policies coverage details are different than others, so we talk in general terms for today’s blog. If you have specific questions I recommend you talking to your friendly agent at Heuer Insurance. In a nutshell most homeowners policies coverage for the distant student will automatically extend from your home, in the amount of 10% of your coverage C, or Property coverage. The Liability coverage for that distant student is also typically extended from your homeowners’ policy. Any “high valued” items like a computer or expensive bike, might want to be specifically listed in your homeowner’s policy, that way you can be sure you have the proper coverage and the deductible is also waived. Sounds simple huh?

The situation on how it affects your car insurance policy is a little different but straight forward as well. Again, I suggest a conversation with your Heuer Insurance agent to discuss any specifics. First off, the rates remain the same as though they still lived at home. Even better than that, at times there are discounts for “Distant Students” and “Good Students”. If this scenario sounds like your family, that call to Heuer Insurance is important!

Heuer Insurance Agency’s July Newsletter

Our much appreciated receptionist Gina, suggested a blog on the horrors of parking lots. She is a hard working Mom to not one, but two young drivers and we all need to wish her a little bit of good luck with that!

Well she is right, parking lots are FULL of dangers and it takes an experienced and/or lucky driver to make it through them. Fortunately technology has come to the rescue! Most new cars have back up cameras as well as side sensors to guide us in and out of our parking spot. The bigger the vehicle the more important these types of sensors are.  All the sensors in the world help you in your car, but the biggest danger is always the “other guy”. While it’s not your job to teach the “other guy”, you can take steps to avoid him or her. Experts suggest the most defensive way to park in a parking lot, is to drive THROUGH the parking space so you don’t have to back up at all. This takes the whole “I started backing out first and they hit me!” scenario out of the picture. If you can’t find a spot that lets you pull through the space, look towards the back of the parking lot for your answer. Another real danger not often talked about is taking care opening your doors, including cautioning anyone in the back seat to look before opening the back doors. So, between new technology and a better way to park, we hope you navigate the roads and stay aware out there. Be at your best, off your phone and navigate parking lots with all due care. Most police departments don’t investigate parking lot accidents, so you are stuck either paying your deductible or dealing with the other party’s insurance, and neither one is going to be any fun.

Here’s a shout out to all our referral winners! Congratulations Jeff A, Grace D and Angela K for winning our monthly $100 VISA gift cards.

An extra shout out to Jeff A for winning the BIG prize which was concert tickets to Keith Urban in South Lake Tahoe! Thank you all for the referrals, be sure you get yours in you could be the next winner!

Heuer Insurance Agency’s June Newsletter

Hello to our faithful blog readers, and a huge thank you for your continued loyalty and your business! Our last blog highlighted a special lady, so let’s follow that spirit and spend an entire blog talking about some other special ladies and several awesome guys at the same time. I am so proud to be associated with the Men and Women that make up the long tenured staff of Heuer Insurance Agency that I thought some of our new readers would find this blog interesting.

Debi Baucom has had the back of three generations of Heuer Insurance owners, for 41 years!!!! Think she’s special in our eyes? She manages the office and runs the Commercial Lines Department.

LaRee Cobb has been a solid pro in our personal lines department for 32 years! Her clients LOVE her, if you know her you know why!

Michelle Meeks is one of Debi’s associates in the Commercial Lines Department…and knows forms, coverages, and commercial insurance ALMOST as well as she cooks a quiche. World famous stuff right there folks! A true 23 year veteran of Heuer Insurance.

Cheryl Ulma is another pro in the Personal Lines Department and Larry always referred to her as his rock star! Cheryl has been here 21 years, and STILL rocks the insurance world. Cheryl sets the tone when it comes to expertise, professionalism and efficiency. No one can write Personal Lines Insurance like Cheryl.

Gina McCall is the beautiful face and voice of Heuer Insurance. I can’t tell you how many compliments we’ve had about Gina in the last 7 years! She’s the BEST to ever fill that position and we all love her.

Rhonda Hendrickson has been a real force in the Personal Lines Department for over 6 years now. She has been a tremendous help to our clients as well as the computer needs within the agency. Rhonda just recently hit her 6 year mark. Please join me in congratulating her anniversary!

Our newest special lady has only been with the agency for about 4 months, and has jumped right into our Personal Lines Department. I’d like to once again introduce Laurel Marsh. Laurel came to the agency with a little experience and in a very short time has embraced the Heuer culture and has already proven to be a great addition to our team.

While it may be the year of the Woman, we have a couple awesome Men working here too!

Derek Moore has been working in the Commercial Lines Department for over 2 years and knows his clients well. Derek’s true calling is dealing with clients. We will start a transition into a more sales focused role here soon. Don’t be surprised if he calls you to check in. In addition to selling and servicing Commercial Insurance he is active with Rotary, BNI and several other organizations.

We are incredibly lucky to have such a tenured staff. It is vitally important to the agency, and even more important to our clients. Just think, the years I listed are only those years with Heuer Insurance. Most of them have had many other years in the insurance industry in other capacities. You’re dealing with a very experienced group of professionals when you deal with the Heuer staff! Dedication and consistency has allowed our family to serve you for 89 years. We hope you value your trusted advisor as much as we do.
