Heuer Insurance Agency Featured in Northern Nevada Business Weekly

Heuer Insurance Agency and President Adam Heuer were featured in the Northern Nevada Business Weekly! Heuer discussed the agency, owning a business in northern Nevada, and how he and his team are supporting their clients and community during COVID-19. Read the full Q&A feature below!

NNBW: Tell us about your business and some of the most important services you provide?

Answer: Heuer Insurance Agency is a full-service residential, commercial, and life insurance provider. From auto, home and life to general liability, workers compensation and professional liability, we provide our clients with comprehensive insurance coverages from top-rated providers and will ensure they have a policy that best fits their insurance needs.

NNBW: What are some of the key things your business does to ensure premium levels of customer service?

Our insurance agents treat our customers as people and not polices. We understand that we are handling an important part of a person or a company’s life and we strive to provide them with accurate information, quick responses, and a policy that will work for them. Heuer Insurance Agency is also proud to be recognized as a Trusted Choice ® Independent Insurance Agency. This recognition means we are able to offer quality service, competitive pricing, a broad choice of products, and unparalleled advocacy.

NNBW: What makes Northern Nevada such a great place to own and operate a business?

Answer: Northern Nevada has been home to Heuer Insurance Agency since the beginning. Clarence Heuer, my great grandfather, opened Heuer Insurance Agency on January 15, 1929. As a fourth-generation owner of the 9th oldest local business in the Reno/Sparks area, I am proud to continue to operate a business in northern Nevada, along with calling this place my home. The region provides great incentives and a business-friendly environment.

NNBW: As a local business owner, why do you feel it’s important to give back to the community?

Answer: It’s important to us as a local company and members of this community to focus many of our efforts on donating time and money to local and national organizations. Through the City of Sparks, we adopted a park where we assist with park clean up and general maintenance. During the holiday season, we participated in the Food & Fund Drive for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Additionally, we are involved with various non-profit and community organizations including Reno South Rotary Club, Dodge for a Cause, Books for Life, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and American Red Cross, to name a few. We are honored to be able to give back to the northern Nevada community in any way we can. Serving the community is a core value to Heuer Insurance Agency. We live and work here, and we want to help make our community great.

NNBW: What are you doing to support other local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Answer: Since many of our clients are local businesses, we are continuing to support them with updated information regarding insurance industry updates including coverage for loss of business income, Workers Compensation, and helping navigate the challenges brought on by COVID-19. Local businesses and companies across our nation are experiencing unprecedented cuts and we want to be able to update our clients with the most accurate and timely information regarding their policies and coverages. In addition to assisting our clients, we are supporting other businesses such as restaurants, coffee shops, delis and others that are hurting right now. Supporting our community, other local businesses, and economy is crucial during difficult times.

Heuer Insurance Agency’s July Newsletter

Letter from Heuer

As I sat here this morning working the emails that had come in over the weekend I overheard a conversation out in the office and it really made me sit back and think. How can it be July 1st already?! I swear the years are getting shorter and shorter.  It seems as if time is more valuable than ever and we continually get less of it. That said, we will be adjusting our hours for the upcoming Holiday weekend in order to spend a little more quality time with our families and friends.

In observance of the upcoming Holiday we will be closed Thursday, July 4th and open from 9:00am – 4:00pm on July 5th. Should you need to contact us while we are our closed I invite you to visit our website where you will find self-service options that should get you by until we are able to help you. We hope you enjoy a safe and happy Independence Day weekend.

Industry 101

It might surprise you to know that an unendorsed homeowner policy has limits of coverage for theft of certain types of personal items such as jewelry, watches, furs, and firearms. Coverage for items like coins and stamps can be limited to a special limit of coverage no matter what the cause of damage is.

A common limit for theft of jewelry, watches, furs, precious and semi-precious stones on a homeowners policy is $1,500. Not to mention, your policy deductible would apply to this type of loss. If you misplace those items as opposed to a loss by theft, you may not be covered at all under your normal insurance coverage.

No need to worry though, different types of additional coverages are available. Many carriers offer endorsements that will increase the limit of coverage for losses to jewelry, money, firearms, furs, and more. Other additional coverages are available for purchase to cover a particular item on your policy at a specific amount. This type of coverage is called a scheduled personal articles endorsement.  A personal articles schedule provides broader coverage and in most cases does not include a deductible.

Here are some steps to make sure your valuables are properly insured in the New Year:
• Take inventory of your belongings. Make a list of valuable items that you have and make sure items you no longer own are not on your policy if you have an existing scheduled property endorsement. Be sure to determine the current value of your items.
• Discuss with your agent what types of additional coverage may be right for you. Your independent agent may require an appraisal for some items. This ensures that there is no discrepancy in the value or replacement cost of the property.
• Consider coverage for items such as electronics, musical instruments, and artwork. Cell phones, laptops, cameras, and many other types of property can be insured on a personal articles coverage endorsement.
If you experience a loss, additional coverage for certain property items can save you a lot of trouble in the long run. The more accurate and updated your policy and coverages are, the easier it is for your claims to be handled quickly and efficiently.

Heuer Insurance Agency’s June Newsletter

Greetings

We have had a lot going on the past few months and have struggled a bit to be consistent with our newsletter. We apologize for that and will strive to do better. Things here at the Agency continue to progress with our focus this year being automation. We are working hard on new ways to bring value to our clients while providing the same outstanding customer service you are accustomed to. Most of the changes will be ones you don’t see but on the back end will provide us with a more efficient way to service your accounts. We recognize that time is valuable and we want your interactions with our office to be as quick and efficient as possible. There will be more on this later.

Wow it’s hot and dry out now… what a drastic change from the past few weeks. With all that rain we are sure to have an active fire season. We’ve talked in the past about defensible space between your house and flammable bushes, trees, or weeds and how important it is to keep your yard free of this overgrowth. Now is the perfect time to give your property a hard look again. Are you ready in case a wildfire gets too close to your house?   Besides the whole defensible space conversation, here are “Ten Tips for Wildfire Safety” in the event a fire is coming your way.
1). Turn a light on in each room
2). Close all windows, doors and fireplace dampers
3). Remove curtains and flammable materials from windows
4). Turn off all pilot lights and shut off propane tanks and natural gas
5). Seal attic and ground vents
    6). Place outside furniture inside
7). Prop a ladder against the house for easy access to roof
8). Connect garden hoses to outside taps
9). Wet the roof and shrubs within 15 feet of all structures
10). Continually check the roof, attic and yard for embers, smoke and fire for at least 12 hours

In the event of a loss, call us as soon as possible!   And good luck!

Employee Spotlight

It’s with great pleasure (and some sadness) that after 41 glorious years Debi has decided to retire. Fortunately, she has agreed to transition out slowly and will be working 2 days a week for the foreseeable future. This email would be far too long if I took the time to list out all of the great things Debi has done for the Agency over the years. The Heuer Insurance Agency will be forever grateful for the years of hard work, dedication and loyalty that Debi given us all these years.

Debi – we wish you a long and happy retirement!

Industry 101 – 6 Tips for Preventing Water Damage from Appliances

Did you know that washing machines are one of the main sources of water damage to homes?  Others that top the list include hot water heaters and dishwashers. Fortunately, there are a few easy and inexpensive steps you can take help to prevent these types of losses:

  1. Check for leaks:  Thoroughly check the area around appliances for any signs of leaking every four months.
  2. Check supply hoses: Check the supply hoses regularly to ensure a tight connection, and no breaks or tears. It’s a good idea to replace supply hoses for washing machines and dishwashers every five years even if there are no signs of wear. Sometimes, wear only shows on the inside. Reinforced, steel braided hoses are recommended.
  3. Read the manual: Always refer to your manufacturer’s guidelines for types of soap and load recommendations for the washing machine and dishwasher. Most new washing machines require HE detergents.
  4. Flush your water heater: It is recommended to flush your water heater once per year to ensure you have fresh water and to remove sediment.
  5. Don’t leave running appliances unattended. Try to only operate washing machines and dishwashers when someone is at home.
  6. Replace hot water heater as needed. It’s recommended to replace the hot water heater when it is nearing the end of its life expectancy, even if there aren’t any problems. As the water heater ages, the risk of a slow leak or sudden burst increases.

Leak detection systems are a great tool to monitor your appliances, and even automatically shut off water in the event of a detected leak.  While there are expenses with a leak detection system, it might just score you a discount on your homeowners policy! Leak detection systems can be added to individual appliances or an entire house.

Of course, not all losses can be prevented, but following these tips should lower your chances of a loss. In the event of a water leak, it is important to know where your water shut-off valve is located so that water can quickly be turned off to minimize damage.
